advancing individuals through mentoring
- The NFDA/YFP mentorship program will serve the needs of young fastener professionals by pairing them with willing mentors focused on advancing the mentee’s personal career goals. Mentors and mentees will be matched based on professional skills that the mentee wants to acquire and that the mentor has to offer.
- Mentees will be required to develop a specific set of goals which form the basis of the mentor/mentee relationship, and mentors are asked to work with the mentee on advancing these objectives.
- In order to have the best possible partnering, both the mentor and mentee must clearly understand their roles.
- All mentees and mentors are required to follow the guidelines below.
- To provide support and education opportunities to young fastener professionals
- To provide young fastener professionals with a mentor and volunteer experiences to enhance their career development and expand their professional networks
- To encourage more young fastener professionals to assume leadership roles in the fastener industry
- To expose mentors and their organizations to new ideas
- To develop a more diverse leadership pool for the fastener industry
- Mentors and mentees must be willing to assume the appropriate roles as defined below.
- In order to participate in this program, mentees and mentors must complete their respective applications.
- Participants need to be willing to make a minimum twelve-month commitment. At the end of this time, mentors and mentees can reapply to the program, should they wish.
- Mentees may only have one mentor at a time.
- Mentors need not be from NFDA member companies, but priority will be given to mentors from member companies.
- Mentees must be from NFDA or YFP member companies.
- Mentors and mentees must be available to provide periodic feedback to NFDA and YFP regarding the program.
Role of Mentee
- Mentees need to complete the Mentorship Program Application Form - Mentees through the YFP website.
- Mentees are responsible for facilitating the relationship.
- Mentees are responsible for driving the relationship, meaning that mentees must have clear goals for what they want to achieve from participation and take responsibility for pursuing those objectives.
- Mentees should take initiative and communicate with mentors to schedule meetings, communicating regularly with their mentors.
- Mentees should be prepared with questions and goals to work on with their mentor during each scheduled session. Suggested best practice is to share topics for conversation a week before the call to give the mentor time to think about the issues.
- Mentees must keep scheduled commitments and provide advance notice of any unforeseen conflicts requiring rescheduling.
- Mentees must not ask their mentors for a job during the mentorship period.
- Mentees are expected to be professional, courteous, and gracious in every interaction with their mentors.
Role of Mentor
- Mentors need to complete the Mentorship Program Application Form - Mentors. This information will be used by mentees to request possible matches.
- Mentors are responsible for meeting with their mentees on a regular basis.
- When mentees give mentors call topics in advance, mentors are encouraged to think about resources and experiences that can speak to that issue.
- Mentors are responsible for attending calls in a timely manner and providing as much advance notice as possible of conflicts requiring rescheduling.
- Mentors should not offer employment to their mentees during the mentorship period.
- Mentors are expected to be professional, courteous, and gracious in every interaction with their mentees.
- Mentors are requested to serve in a supportive and nurturing role, encouraging their mentee's professional development and growth.
